Secret Salon

Secret Salon 1000 498 Design Business Chamber Singapore

An equitable space that can be enjoyed by all – this was the centrepiece of the revamp of an existing hair salon in an HDB enclave. The welcoming “community space” of Secret Salon allows the neighbourhood ‘aunties’ to sit, call out the ‘ah boys’ to the “secret” salon and have their daily cup of tea while chit-chatting with their peers.

Bjorn Yeo, Creative Principal of Tripple and Jonathan Poh, Founder & Director of Provolk Architects

In our first few interactions with the business owners, we noticed how close they were to the residents. Therefore in our design approach, we wanted them to maintain this relationship with the community. We made this happen by carving out an external seating area within the shop’s tenancy area as a welcoming and friendly interface to the uncles and aunties who would walk by.

The elusive façade panels that allude to the imagery of “good morning” towels drying out in the sun also creates a sense of mystery for the general public who are pleasantly surprised that a salon is within and stop by to enquire more. This is organic marketing in the works.

BBC Studios & BBC Global News, Singapore Office

BBC Studios & BBC Global News, Singapore Office 1000 667 Design Business Chamber Singapore

The design goal for this new office is to create an environment that inspires world-class broadcasting and suits the regional office’s mobile workforce. With a pantry at the heart of its design, BBC Studios & BBC Global News, Singapore Office is spilt into two distinct zones, one catering to social interaction and another for productive focused work. The hot-desking arrangement has desks allocated to 71% of the staff headcount.

Aviruth Trungtreechart, Design Director,
Conexus Studio

How has SG Mark helped you in your area of work? Or how do you think your design has impacted users?

Thanks to widely-recognised and reputable awards such as SG Mark, people have been changing the way they think about design, especially in office interiors. As the workplace changes, it’s important that office design keeps up and awards like SG Mark are crucial in highlighting these advancements.

Good workplace design is now about creating a comfortable and inspiring environment that supports productivity and creativity. It’s the result of a design process that starts with asking questions about goals, people, and how work happens. The benefits of good design are both tangible and intangible. On the one hand, employers can see that it increases efficiency which ultimately increases their profitability. But they also appreciate the softer side of better design – there is evidence to show that happier employees are more creative and productive.

We are grateful and humbled by the award, which motivates us to continue our work in delivering best-in-class office design concepts that inspire and bring out the best of today’s hybrid workforce. Conexus Studio will continue pushing the boundaries in workplace design and we look forward to seeing more of our dynamic and creative spaces recognised with prestigious awards and accolades.

East Coast Park Rejuvenation

East Coast Park Rejuvenation 1000 611 Design Business Chamber Singapore

A refreshed experience while paying homage to its history – this revamp of Singapore’s largest park encapsulates the theme, aesthetics and park experience. Designed to create meaningful relationships between the physical space and users by connecting people with nature and activating spaces for people’s enjoyment, everything — from signages, landscaping to sustainability of the park’s buildings — has been improved.

Suen Wee Kwok, Executive Director, RSP

How do you think East Coast Park Rejuvenation has impacted users?

“Thoughtful design is key to creating active architecture that uplifts and enriches lives and the human spirit.”

This, in turn, enhances the fostering of meaningful relationships between the community and physical place. In the rejuvenation of an iconic space at East Coast Park, for instance, the team collaborated and engaged with the authorities and community at large to reimagine the park experience, promote wellness and social activities, while paying homage to its rich history and people’s memories of the place.

Between Two Worlds – Light to Night Festival 2020

Between Two Worlds – Light to Night Festival 2020 1000 662 Design Business Chamber Singapore

Quarter means four. And in @quarters.sg, they undergird Design, Research, Community, and Craft in everything they do. Boundaries between art, architecture and literature were transcended in this art installation inspired by Italo Calvino’s text, “Invisible Cities”.

Felicia Toh (left), Kenneth Koh (Right),
Quarters Architects

“We inscribed the walls and mirrors with lines of Kevin Wong’s poetry that spoke of love and loss, letting visitors reflect on the mixed narratives of progress in light of the surrounding historic monuments on site.”

Four local writers wrote site-specific sonnets that were interpreted into spatial sculptures by architects. The end result was a multi-faceted narrative that ties fragments of history and present realities within specific historic markets in Singapore’s civic district. Between Two Worlds at Esplanade Park is an intimate passageway surrounded by mirrored memory pools.

It gives the visitors of SINGAPO人 the promise that it would be a great experience.

How do you think your design has impacted users?

Through a close partnership with the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, we were able to introduce Singaporeans to local Chinese culture, a topic that is often deemed ‘boring’ and ‘traditional’, through a highly interactive experience that is both unexpected and delightful.

DBS Giving Tree

DBS Giving Tree 1000 790 Design Business Chamber Singapore

Recognising the considerable waste generated from holiday festivities, DBS came up with this Christmas decoration to give back to the planet. Made with upcycled wood from used shipping pallets, the trees were repurposed as Chinese New Year decorations and thereafter as fixtures in the DBS Treasures Lounge at Changi Airport Terminal 3. Decorations were also made entirely from sustainable materials.

Vanessa Lin, Lead of Employee Experience and Communications, Corporate Real Estate Strategy and Administration, DBS Bank

We are excited to be a recipient of the inaugural 2021 SG Mark Award for Sustainable Design. Sustainability has always been at the core of DBS’ purpose-driven DNA. We strive to embed sustainability in everything we do, and the birth of this project stems from a question that we asked ourselves:

“What if our decorations made the earth better?”

Rooted in our drive to be more involved in the circular economy and achieve net zero energy operations, the DBS Giving Tree project is a ground-up initiative that demonstrates the small ways we can contribute to changes in our surroundings, play our part and give back to the community and planet even during the festive season, and inspire more sustainable actions every day!

The FUGA Farm Community

The FUGA Farm Community 1000 667 Design Business Chamber Singapore

With its contemporary architectural design, this suburban farm located in the outskirts of Beijing has become a standard for farm modernisation. Transcending the notions of the traditional Chinese farm, FUGA inspires city dwellers to look beyond the negative aspects of farming, and to get interested and involved with sustainable farming, recycling and reusing.

Lim Leng Kuan (left), Teo Cheng Huat (right), Moss Design Studio

How has SG Mark helped you in your area of work?

Winning the SG Mark has given us the endorsement we need to continue spearheading projects related to environmental awareness, motivating us to further advocate for incorporating sustainability concepts throughout our work. Throughout our projects, we have also been promoting community participation and the revival of traditional craftsmanship.

We believe that such concepts should extend beyond exterior projects such as farms and gardens, and be applied to interior commercial spaces and facilities. The SG Mark has allowed us to expand our network, enabling us to share our experiences with new friends and professionals to come up with new ideas and design concepts that provide more fuel for our work.

How do you think your design has impacted users?

Our design focuses on solving problems using existing resources. So for example to minimize unnecessary materials wastage, we incorporate design elements that make it easy to recycle, reduce and reuse, while educating workers to use their skills and new methods to make small changes with great impact. Through this, we have been able to promote sustainability concepts, such as raising awareness for better waste management and reviving forgotten craftsmanship.

Reveal Your Thaidentity: Experience the Thai Way in Thailand

Reveal Your Thaidentity: Experience the Thai Way in Thailand 1000 563 Design Business Chamber Singapore

No reason for Singaporeans to visit the Land of Smiles because they’ve visited Thai padi fields or shopped at Chatuchak? The Thai Tourism Authority convinces Singaporeans otherwise in this marketing campaign. Bold caricatures and animation to showcase the Thai people, culture and charm in a fun and relatable manner are used to entice Singaporeans to re-visit Thailand.

AUGHT Pte Ltd (from left to right)
Tomaz Goh, Hazel Ting, Florence Chua, Howard Chee.

How do you think Reveal Your Thaidentity has impacted users?

“Add some flavour, spice it up, and let the rhythm move our audience”.

We had never intended to retell the old touristic tales of Thailand. Instead, it was all about the fun and excitement that one usually experienced when travelling to Thailand – portrayed in a more caricature way.

We were delighted by the positive response to the campaign. The fact that our audiences can genuinely relate and get entertained by the campaign demonstrates the values of communication design when approaching it with authenticity and relevance.
